Electrical Equipment Overview

Electrical Equipment Applications represent the historical core focus of The Gund Company. Our family history in the electrical industry is traced back to the founding of Bussmann Manufacturing Company in St. Louis, the world's largest manufacturer of electrical fuses. Al Bussmann, Sr. was the founder of Bussmann Manufacturing and the grandfather of The Gund Company's President, Paul J. Gund.

Fuse Board

Today, The Gund Company continues to produce insulating components used by Bussmann Manufacturing to produce fuses that Paul helped develop during his time in the lab during the summers between chemical engineering courses in college.  The photo at left shows a typical fuse mounting board manufactured from NEMA G-9 Glass Melamine Laminate.

In addition to components for fuses, The Gund Company also produces a complete line of rigid insulating materials for applications in electrical equipment.   The illustration below shows common electrical power system applications for components manufactured by The Gund Company.  It also shows some common composite material applications found in our everyday environment.

Common Insulation and Composite Applications

Common Electrical Insulation & Composite Material Applications

1) Power Generation Plant

Complete stator and field insulation components for nuclear, fossil, or hydro generators.

High and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breaker insulation components.

Bus system insulation components including Isophase bus duct insulation.

Power transformer insulation components including tap changer boards, compressed wood step blocks and collars, as well as pressboard coil winding insulation.

2) Wind Generation Farm

Complete generator stator and field insulation systems including Class H Magnetic Wedges for high thermal endurance and high efficiency applications.

3) Power & Distribution Transformers

For oil filled power and distribution transformers, TGC supplies a complete range of paper phenolic laminate for tap changers, fabricated pressboard for coil winding applications, and compressed wood for collars, supports, and step blocks.

For dry type transformers, TGC is an integrated manufacturer of both the raw material and finished fabricated parts for winding combs, phase barriers, coil shims, and coil duct strips (dogbones).

4) Distribution Switchgear

As an integrated manufacturer of NEMA GPO-3 Glass Polyester Laminate, TGC supplies phase barriers, pultruded GPO-3 angle and channel, bus duct windows, and bus supports.  TGC also manufactures our proprietary PolyPro FR Flame Retardant, water resistant insulation for motor control centers, watt hour meters, and power supplies.

5) Waste Water Treatment Plants

For electric motors, our MM&M Electrical Supply division is the world leader in rigid insulation components for motor manufacturing and repair.   From Class F to Class H wedges and pole collars to magnetic wedges for induction motors, MM&M can offer a range of responsive solutions.

In addition, our composite materials are commonly used for outdoor U.V. and chemical resistant applications in waste water treatment plants for weirs, troughs, and enclosures.

6) Foundries & Steel Mills

Electric furnaces consume large amounts of electricity requiring extensive power supply equipment from transformers to switchgear to related buswork.   TGC manufactures a complete line of insulation components for electric furnace applications.

7) Hospitals & Medical Equipment

For standby generator sets, TGC supplies the world's leading generator manufacturers with stator and armature insulation materials.   TGC also supplies NEMA GPO-3 material for automatic transfer switch applications.   For critical power applications, TGC also manufactures complete insulation systems for power supplies that back up everything from computers to sensitive operating room equipment.

In addition, TGC supplies fabricated components for MRI machines, radiolucent composite materials for hospital beds and X-ray machines.

8) Airplanes & Aerospace

TGC supplies motor insulation for a wide range of applications including actuators, flaps, and landing gear applications.   Our components are also used for avionic power supply insulation.

Our composites are also used to build the fixtures that allow the construction of fuselage and wing assemblies.

TGC's wide range of capability is complemented by our focused experience in specific applications allowing our customers to find solutions to their requirements.
